Why do people ride Snowmobiles ?

Get out of the house - Many people get cabin fever from being cooped up all winter.  They complain of the winter doldrums. There are many people that believe that winter depression is caused by lack being exposed to sunlight.  Snowmobiling provides an excellent chance to get out of the house and do something

Get into nature - Most snowmobile trails are old logging roads and trails that go through the woods.  Many times animal tracks and sometimes even animals are observed along side the trails.

Enjoy a group experience - We usually snowmobile in groups.  The people in the group all have functions that add to the cohesiveness of the groups.  The lead person trys not to get lost and not to lose anyone behind them. Each rider should watch for the person behind them to make sure they keep up.  The last person try's to make sure no one from the group has strayed and signals the leader at stops that everyone is there.  It is a group of people all relying on each other.

Go places otherwise inaccessible - A snowmobile can travel into many places that 'normal' people would not be able to get to in the winter.  It is easy to go 100 miles a day on a snowmobile, can you imagine doing that on snow shoes?  There is some really beautiful winter scenes out there that are inaccessible to normal people.

Enjoy the weather - Get out and enjoy the beautiful sunny days and fresh air.  Even the overcast days are OK.  Imagine being out on the trail when it starts snowing - it is beautiful.  Try to stay away from the rain though, it isn't fun.

Adrenaline Challenges - If you are so inclined, snowmobiles offer hill climbing, racing across a lake and being in breathless scenic views.  Most snowmobiles today are capable of speeds in excess of 60 MPH and some can do well over a 100.  Of course the speed limit in New Hampshire tops out at 45 MPH so be careful out there!

For doing work - Snowmobiles are also used for work.  The men in green (New Hampshire Fish & Game) use them for the work of patrolling the trails.  Snowmobiles are also used to bring firewood out of the woods and people into their cabins when the roads aren't plowed.
